Who needs a Valentine?

I re-read my last post and I'm not sure it made a lot of sense.  The  part about Valentines meaning nothing to me at all, anyway.

Don't get me wrong.  I like giving out the little manufactured cutsie love notes.  I also like giving out little handmade love notes the other 364 days of the year (but I don't normally make the time for that.  I should).  I love receiving all of those cutsie notes as well, all year.

I just don't subscribe to the ONE day of the year that you HAVE to do that stuff.   And it makes me angry when single people get all depressed on Valentines day (I have *never* ever done that).  What makes that one day of the year so important to be loved?  Don't you know that you are always loved?  By someone.  It doesn't have to be sexual or romantic love.

I do think that the "holiday" has become too commercial.  But I think they all have (even Superbowl Sunday has that commercial holiday mentality these days.  It's football folks.  Football.).  And we are the ones who feed that machine.  So I say "don't complain about it being a Hallmark holiday if you fell for it and purchased the overpriced chocolate and roses and stood outside your restaurant waiting for a table, even though you made reservations weeks ago!"

I'm going out today to buy a half priced heart shaped box of chocolate to share at the office.

Pete brought home his bag (only partially decorated) full of Valentines from his class.  There were not many in there, some didn't even have writing on them, and some weren't even folded!  I guess he isn't the only one who has outgrown it.  He is only in it for the candy.  There was definitely candy.

Repete woke up with a tummyache on the 15th.  He ate ALL of his V-day candy at school before I could see it all and he'd have to ask permission to have a piece.  He didn't learn anything from it either.   If he had a bag full of candy on the 15th, he would have eaten every bite!

I LOVE those kids!

Happy Valentines Day

Ok, so Valentines Day was yesterday.  And it means nothing at all to me.  It never meant much other than I got to give out the cute little love cards to my friends.  (which I still like to do).  This year it is a reminder to me that the time is going by so fast!

Pete refused to to cards this year.   Every year has been a struggle to get him to write even his own name on 25 cards, let alone write the names of all the kids in his class.  He'd like to stop at 2 or NONE.   This year he told me that he only likes the candy anyway and isn't going to pass out cards.

Repete couldn't wait to write his cards out.  He begged me each day to go to the store to get the cards so he could do them with his home work.  He carefully chose cards for each friend and made sure the girls got cards that seemed appropriate (how could bakugan cards NOT be appropriate for everyone?).  He was so excited and loved every part of it.

Since Pete wouldn't do them I tried to sweeten the deal by making cookies for everyone in the class.  He was pretty excited about using the rolling pin and the cookie cutters (all 3 boys were.  We often have one of their friends over for the weekend and I made sure to include him in the cookie project).  Repete and the buddy decorated the finished cookies with plenty of frosting, and love notes (really.  Repete wrote notes on his cookies with the frosting pens).  Pete made swirls on each cookie.  One little blue spiral (until Repete snarked at him for using all the blue. Then he switched to yellow.).  He said it was faster.  He was right.  he had the most cookies cut out and the least amount of decoration and he was done first.  I bagged them all up and each kid in their classes got cookies.  Pete came home with a bag full of goodies so I'm really glad that I sent something with him.

But I'm struck with the fact that he is now 10 years old and thinks that he has outgrown Valentines cards already.  Where did the time go?  Is he really old enough to outgrow that?  Cap'n and I decided that he may just be taking a break.  In a few years when he discovers those sweet love noted get him attention from the girls maybe he will want to do it.  Maybe he hasn't outgrown it yet, maybe he just hasn't grown into it yet.

And February 14 means that we are already halfway through February of 2011!!!  Where the heck did January go???  I still have January chores to do.  I'm not ready for February to even have started!!   I haven't finished my Nano story.  I haven't spent time learning German.  I haven't finished my quilt tops.  And I haven't cleaned my house for the new year!  I'm exhausted and haven't done anything yet!
