This blog is going to be changed up. I've been getting a lot of traffic here from blog sites all over. It's fine and dandy for my other blogs to be viewed by people I don't know, but this one wasn't intended for that. Friends and family, please let me know if you want to be authorized to read this blog. I'll make sure you have access.
I plan to do it by this weekend, so hurry!!

Haircuts are drama at our house
Pete has been growing his hair out for 5 years. I require him to get trimmed up and thinned out once in a while, but other than looking shaggy he is allowed to have any length he wants. He is a well behaved tween with straight A's. There is no reason that long hair has to be a battle for us. He combs it all the time, even though it's hard to tell he does it sometimes because there is sooo much hair. The kid has enough hair for 3 people.
Repete prefers to keep his hair short. A little length makes him too hot and he gets headaches. It's no effort for me to drop hints that his hair is looking a little long and he asks for a cut. I had an idea for a cut that I thought he would like. A very 90's skater type cut. Longer on top and shaved on the sides. He thought it was a *great* idea! Until the very next day when Justin Beiber made headlines for his new haircut (that really made headlines on whatever news feed I saw that day. What a world we live in.). It was the same cut. I dropped it, but two days later Repete said he'd still like it.
So I made an appointment for him to get a hair cut. I told Pete that I hadn't scheduled him in, but if Shanna, our amazing hair cutter, had time he needed a trim too. When Repete was done, I decided that it was late enough to be on our way and Pete could skip a trim. And he was disappointed! He said "you told me I could have a hair cut too". So we stayed. He picked a haircut from pictures on the internet and I stood shocked that he was doing it.
Pete looks like a completely different kid. It might have been a mistake. I think he looks older and more mature. So far he likes it. Change is good sometimes. :)

I don't think he looks like the Beibs at all.
There is enough volume here for a wig. Not enough length though.

Aikido
Pete has been doing Aikido for 7 years now. It sure doesn't feel like that long to me. Sometimes it does to him though. He gets bored with the routine of going there sometimes. Although he always enjoys it when he gets there.
He's been in the adult class for awhile now. I think he was 10 when he got promoted (I can't remember for sure.) He has his yellow belt and he has been happy with that for quite some time. He is comfortable and doesn't subscribe to my "step out of your comfort zone" mantra that I've adopted. But over the last few months I've noticed a change in him. He isn't comfortable with just the basic moves. I've been watching him go to moves he hasn't used in awhile. Moves that he knows but aren't practiced in class all the time. When they get the chance to "take down" using anything they know, he doesn't just use the moves that he learned that day. He reaches back in his mind for something else he knows. And he's good at it.
Last night he asked for the syllabus for his green belt. I had no idea he was going to ask for that! He studied it in the car on the way home and I suspect that he and I will be going over it together so he knows what to expect. It turns out that Sensei mentioned in class that he should pick one up. But the fact that he actually did it, amazes me still.
Repete joined the "big kid class" very early. And for the last year, at least, Sensei has mentioned that he wished Repete was just a little taller. He has the skill to be in the adult class. He's so little though. He also said he wished all of his students had Repetes focus and drive. The kid has no fear and will practice until he gets it right. Recently he and another boy have been pulled aside in class and are practicing higher level skills. He loves it. He has also been invited several times to join the adult sparring class with his brother. He is paired with the smallest people in the class to be safe, but he loves it! And comes home exhausted. It's wonderful. He's eyeballing the green belt as well.

These three boys have been in class together for 7 years. Their conversations used to be Star Wars based. They get quiet when they catch me trying to eavesdrop now.
